D.C. to start `social network' HIV testing program

Washington Blade - Sep 27, 2011 - By Lou Chibbaro Jr.

The National Association of People with AIDS will participate in a D.C. government sponsored pilot program aimed at enlisting people who are HIV positive to persuade their friends and acquaintances through social networks to get tested for HIV.

In a press conference on Tuesday, Mayor Vincent Gray, city health officials, and NAPWA President Frank Oldham said the new program would be another in a series of HIV prevention and testing initiatives employed by the city to curtail the number of new HIV infections.

The news conference was held in at the Metropolitan Community Church of Washington in conjunction with National Gay Men's HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, which is sponsored by NAPWA.

"While the District of Columbia has made great strides in fighting the epidemic, we're still having 700 to 800 new HIV diagnoses every year, and the greatest proportion among those new diagnoses is still gay men," said Dr. Gregory Pappas, senior deputy director of the D.C. Department of Health's HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, STD, and TB Administration (HAHSTA).

"We estimate that there are about 10,000 people in the District of Columbia who are HIV positive and don't know their status," said Pappas, who is among Gray's high-level gay appointees.

Pappas said the pilot program is modeled after successful programs in New York City and San Francisco. He said those cities retain community based AIDS advocacy and service groups to help recruit teams of HIV positive gay men to reach out to people they know and to persuade them to "come in" for testing.

"In the city we have networks of positive people through organizations like NAPWA," Pappas said. "We're working with those groups to go out and bring their friends in, bring their contacts in to testing."

According to Pappas, in the New York program, about 25 percent of those recruited to come in for HIV testing were found to be HIV positive.

Gray and Dr. Mohammed Akhter, director of the D.C. Department of Health, stressed at the news conference that D.C. has a policy of "treatment on demand" for all those who test HIV positive. For those who don't have private insurance, Akhter said, the city provides full treatment and care for people with HIV or AIDS.

Oldham said his organization is calling on all gay men to get tested for HIV as a means of ensuring that those who test positive will remain healthy through treatment. Oldham also points to scientific studies showing that people with HIV who receive the now standard of care treatment are far less likely to infect others because treatment often results in lowering the viral load to a point where the infectivity rate is greatly diminished.

"Treatment is prevention," he said.

NAPWA was scheduled to conclude its National Gay Men's HIV/AIDS Awareness Day activities at 5 p.m. Tuesday in Dupont Circle, where the group was to release into the air more than 300 bright red helium balloons to commemorate people with HIV/AIDS.
Take Action:
  • Boycott Bill O'Reilly and FOX News and their advertisers. Bill discussed a French commercial by McDonalds that was meant to show that McDonalds is Gay Friendly. Bill said what is next? Is McDonalds going to be Al-Qaida friendly as well? Imagine - Bill O'Reilly compares Gays to Al-Qaida! Boycott Fox's Owner "Rupert Murcoch" and get him thrown in jail for illegal - political donations, corruption, greed, bribery, hacking!
  • Boycott Target, Best Buy, Gold's Gym - for donating money towards anti-gay political candidates/organizations. Update: (12/26/2010): Target is continuing to donate to anti-gay groups/causes/politicians. Update 03/08/11 - Lady Gaga Ends Target Partnership, Reportedly Over Target's Poor LGBT Stance. Update 3/25/2010 - Target displays their hypocrisy and Sues California Gay Rights Group for Lobbying Outside Stores. Target is attempting to block the LGBT right of free speech! STOP SHOPPING AT TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Update 4/8/2011: Target lost its case to stop the LGBT from canvassing in front of their stores. A huge PR Disaster for TARGET! Perhaps Target should go out of business as they betrayed their investers and customer base. Target contributed massive funds to a politician who would like to exterminate gays. Now, Target can not stop us from Boycotting them, nor picketing, nor talking to customers near their stores; although, Target allows a anti-gay company such as the Salvation Army to stand outside their door and speak with customers and raise money. Isn't this a double standard?
  • End DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). Prevents Federal employees and Gays in the Military from gaining equal benefits. Prevents Gay Partners from gaining equal benefits.
  • Pass ENDA (Employee Non-Discrimination Act). ENDA would prevent employment discrimination of LGBT workforce.
  • Boycott Salvation Army as they will not hire Gays! "DO NOT DONATE TO THEM."
  • BOYCOTT "Chick-fil-a" for donating money to anti-gay groups.
  • BOYCOTT KOCH INDUSTRIES PRODUCTS- to include their products: Angel Soft toilet paper / Brawny paper towels / Dixie plates, bowls, napkins & cups / Mardi Gras napkins and towels / Quilted Northern toilet paper / Soft 'n Gentle toilet paper / Sparkle napkins / Vanity fair napkins / Zee napkins / Georgia-Pacific paper products & envelopes / All Georgia-Pacific lumber & building products (INVISTA Products) / Lycra / Stainmaster Carpet. The billionaire - Koch brothers are ultra republican - tea bag founders/supporters that do not support causes of the LGBT community.
  • Boycott WALMART - The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, force criticized Wal-Mart for denying employee benefits to same-s-x partners and for failing to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity. By comparison, the group said two other chain stores with a strong presence in New York, Costco and Walgreens, did much better.
  • "Tune Out Trump", Boycott all Trump Hotel, casinos, holdings, The Apprentice and NBC Network! At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a run for president as a Republican. In a interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples, not just marriage. "They should not be able to marry," he said. So why does NBC keep the Apprentice when Donald Trump has stated he may run for president? After making racist remarks about Obama and recv'g public backlash, Trump decided not to run for president after NBC renewed his awful TV Show. How can NBC re-new the clown's show after he pulled such hateful shenanigans? Boycott NBC! Boycott advertisers of The Apprentice and Trump's other business's. Don't shop at any bullding with Donald Trump's name to include Trump Hotels, Casinos, Condo's, Offices, Shops! The Donald has expressed extreme Hatred towards gays and blacks with his birther remarks and anti-gay rhetoric. Remember how poorly Trump treated Rosie O'Donnel? Now we know why he did that! It was hate against a lesbian as we now know he is biget. Unforgiveable! Again, Dump NBC because they air/re-newed Donald Trump's "The Apprentice"! Now the Donald Claims the Long Form Birth certificate is a fraud. And NBC keeps this guy?
  • Boycott Georgia for Execution of Troy Davis @ 11:08 EST, Sep 21, 2011:
Former US President and Former GA Gov. Jimmy Carter felt that TROY DAVIS should not be executed and deserved a re-trial. The Former Director of the FBI feels that TROY DAVIS Was Not Guilty! Do not drive through Goergia as it is dangerous. Do not fly via Atlanta. Do not travel to GA. TELL YOUR COMPANY NOT TO PARTICIPATE IN A CONVENTION IN GA! "Georgia Executes Innocent People!"

Occupy Wall Street: Michael Moore Arrives in Liberty Plaza
Sep 26, 2011 - Jo Harrington - SUITE101

Film-maker and author Michael Moore gave a speech at Liberty Plaza, in New York City. He called Occupy Wall Street 'very historical and very important.'

Occupy Wall Street protesters had just returned to Zuccotti Park (renamed Liberty Plaza) from the latest of their daily marches through the streets of New York. It had been a peaceful progress with none of the controversial arrests, which had marred a similar progress two days before. Several people Tweeted that they had made it to the famous Wall Street bull, before turning around and heading to the small urban park that many have been calling home for the past ten days.

They were in good spirits. This was September 26th 2011, when Noam Chomsky had announced his solidarity with the Occupy Wall Street movement. The protesters had seen their inspiration create several parallel demonstrations around the USA. OccupyChicago has already been set up. As the first of the New York marchers entered Liberty Plaza, a huge cheer went up. Another legendary American activist was standing in their midst. Michael Moore had arrived in person.

Michael Moore: "100 Years From Now People Will Remember."

With the bullhorn removed for legal reasons, Michael Moore gave a speech amplified by the 'human microphone' technique. Every sentence he said was repeated in unison by all in earshot and, by this method, even those at the very back caught every word. What he had to say caused goosebumps on the arms of his listeners and ended in rapturous cheers and applause.

100 years from now people will remember that you came down to this plaza and started this movement." He said, surrounded by protesters echoing it all. "Thank you very much. I am honoured to be in your presence."

This was the climax of an impassioned address. Approximately 100 people heard him in person, but another 5000 were watching from the Global Revolution Livestream. He explained how he had landed in New York City twelve hours previously and 'came down as soon as (he) could'. Unfortunately, it was only a flying visit. He was due to participate in a live debate in the studios of CNN at 9pm. It was already a quarter past seven. But he had to see Liberty Plaza.

"I'm so impressed by what I see here. You have done something very historic and very important. It had to happen somewhere, it might as well be here."

Michael Moore: One of the First Protesters to be Arrested on Wall Street

Michael Moore's speech began with an anecdote, "About eleven years ago, myself and Rage Against the Machine decided to storm the doors of the New York Stock Exchange. For some reason, they're a little faster than I was. I got arrested." He chuckled, self-effacing about his own physique, in comparison with that of his indie-rock band companions. Amid laughter and cheers, he repeated, "I was arrested on Wall Street."

Having established his credentials, he claimed his right to add his own voice to the rhetoric of the campaign, "I know you're in the process of coming up with our demands. If you would allow to state my own personal two cents." He paused, as people shouted their encouragement and consent. "I want to see the people responsible for destroying the lives of millions of people in handcuffs; and led away to justice."

It was just the right tone to use with people, who had experienced over 100 arrests during the past week. But Michael Moore hadn't finished. He raised his hand, "Number two it's time to make the rich pay. Tax them! How much? Not enough! How much? Still not enough!" The repetition of the crowd made the latter sound like a chant and it became one. Voices rose together in a round of 'Tax the rich! Tax the rich!'

Michael waited until it died down, before pressing on, "They are thieves. They are gangsters. They are kleptomaniacs. They have tried to take our democracy and turn it into an hypocrisy."

Michael Moore Encourages the Protesters in Liberty Plaza with
Reference to Stonewall

As a long-standing activist himself, Michael Moore knows a lot about standing against large corporations. He urged protesters not to despair by their low numbers. He had been working for twenty years, with a much smaller group of people, and his achievements have been well chronicled. He reminded them that every person there represented another thousand people at least, who couldn't make the protest in person and that 'warmed (his) heart'.

"Do not despair because there is only a few 100 people here now. All great movements start with just a few 100 people. It was just a few people down the bar at Stonewall. This month for the first time, 54% of the American public said that gay marriage should be legal. That took too long. This has to happen sooner. Amen."

Stonewall was a bar in New York City. The resistance of some of its patrons, after a police raid in 1969, is largely credited with kick-starting the Gay Civil Rights movement.

Michael Moore: "Our Power is Derived from the People."

Michael Moore then talked about how only four hundred people owned the vast majority of the wealth in America and that made them vastly out-numbered by the rest of the population. "What we have to do here is realise how much more power we have than they have. They think power is derived from bank accounts, but our power is derived from the people. All the people, not 400 people."

The protesters started a chant of 'Michael Moore! Michael Moore!' But he silenced them with a shaking of his hands, saying, "No, no, no, no."

That's when he told them that they would be remembered as the people who started this movement. The atmosphere was electric, even felt as a Livestream witness through a shaky camera feed. The applause, when it came, was deafening.

Why "Occupy Wall Street" Critics Are More Clueless Than the Protestors
By Alain Sherter - September 27, 2011 - BNET

Henry Blodget purports to have no idea what the "Occupy Wall Street" protestors in Manhattan's Liberty Plaza really want. The NYT and other major media outlets are equally baffled, characterizing the movement as rudderless or downright loony. Even Mother Jones, the lefty pub named after a famous 19th century labor organizer, sniffs at what it describes as the demonstrators' feckless "posturing."

Do tell. Such critiques say far more about the media's discomfort with popular dissent than anything about the dissent itself, let alone the public fury animating it. In fact, there is nothing particularly mysterious about what the protesters are asking for even if their demands aren't spelled out in ways that newspaper editors tend to like (note to rabble-rousers -- try bullet points next time).

Occupy Wall Street declares its mission straight out: to "restore democracy in America." The group also wants to end "the influence money has over our representatives in Washington." Presumably, the young women who were pepper-sprayed by a New York City policeman this week want the ability to exercise their constitutional rights without getting temporarily blinded. Other protestors simply want a chance:

"I used to a have great construction job, and (now) I can't find a job for more than $10 a hour," said Brandon Szalay, 28, from Boulder, Colo. "I can pay my rent, but I can't buy my groceries and I can't pay my electric bill. It's not good. I've got all sorts of skills, but they tell me I'm either overqualified or underqualified."

Here's what someone else at the rally wants:

My home has been seized, I'm unemployed, there's no job prospects on the horizon. I have two children and I don't see a future for them.

And they smell!

Gee, seems straightforward enough -- work and a future for their kids. And maybe, just maybe such aspirations are under threat these days from the mounting corporate clout in Washington, as Republican leaders abandon all pretense of representing average Americans and as President Obama surrounds himself with emissaries from Wall Street.

Does our media, its fingers pressed as ever to the country's pulse, really need such testimonies to draw a link between the harm done to the U.S. economy by large financial firms, by the torrent of corporate dollars into our politics, and the economic fate of millions of Americans? Dumb question. Of course they don't. Journalists (and even the odd financial pundit) understand such connections all too well. News Corp. (NWS), the company that made the Tea Party, has assigned an entire TV network to exploiting such public outrage.

But comprehending these political and socioeconomic forces isn't the same thing as confronting them. That leaves Blodget's rag, Business Insider, free to focus not on the Occupy Wall Street protesters' message, but on their apparent lack of hygiene. Julia La Roche writes:

[A] bunch of the protesters confessed to me that they have not showered since the start of the movement. In my opinion, the smell is extremely pungent. And the camp site is littered with trash, cardboard and garbage bags piled up.

Populism in this formulation is framed not only as figuratively dirty -- it must literally stink. All those gross hippies packed into a little park! Journalistic "objectivity," by contrast, is a freshly pressed skirt. And what about the vectors of privilege and power fusing together Wall Street and Capitol Hill -- how does that smell?

Underwear sniffers

It isn't only the business press that blur their eyes in scrutinizing Occupy Wall Street's
complaints, that turn away in disgust at the merest whiff of revolution. For instance, the NYT's banner story about the demonstration last weekend wasn't by one of its metro-desk reporters, but by cultural critic Ginia Bellafante.

Unsurprisingly, she focuses on the atmospherics at Zuccotti Park, seizing on the sight of a protester's "cotton underwear" (sure it wasn't rayon?) as evidence of the group's "intellectual vacuum." Bellafante also professes confusion about their aims, claiming that Occupy Wall Street's cause is "virtually impossible to decipher." She, too, can't resist getting in a dig:

The group's lack of cohesion and its apparent wish to pantomime progressivism rather than practice it knowledegeably is unsettling in the face of the challenges so many of its generation face - finding work, repaying student loans, figuring out ways to finish college when money has run out.

Bellafante is entitled to her personal distaste for Occupy Wall Street. But for the Times to use its megaphone to disparage the movement's tactics as somehow inauthentic isn't just to engage in inappropriate editorializing -- it also show a deep ignorance of the history of American progressivism, where wild-and-woolly protest has been the norm for well over a century.

As Abbie Hoffman, himself a famous director of absurdist theater in his day, once said, "Never impose your language on people you wish to reach." And would Bellafante have so glibly ridiculed the "Bonus Marchers," I wonder, the World War I vets who descended on Washington in 1932 to demand payment Congress had previously granted them (and who were killed for their troubles)?

Send in the clowns

Newspaper "coverage" often amounts to its own kind of dissimulation. Yet the bias on display in such articles isn't simply a case of sloppy language. It reflects how many in the commentariat really think. As a result, caricaturing the Occupy Wall Streeters as smelly, incoherent buffoons isn't merely to diminish their message - it is to stage a counter-revolution.

The aim? To reinforce the existing arrangements of power that, among other things, have tended to erode the media's impulse (never very strong, it's worth noting) to undress the powerful. These "jerry-built modes of thought," as historian Lawrence Goodwyn, a leading scholar of the progressive movement, called them in "The Populist Moment,"

… have served to help protect traditional elites by strewing complicated psychological and emotional roadblocks in the path of those with unsanctioned but relatively thoughtful innovations. So pervasive have been these habits of thought that established hierarchies have tended to be defended as venerable repositories of good sense when they are, in fact, merely powerful and orderly.

A complementary presumption is that insurgent movements are nonsensical.

That presumption is starkly evident in much of the coverage given to Occupy Wall Street. By the same token, it also highlights the group's - and any mass movement's - power: It unites people in a common experience and speaks to them in a way they can understand. In this case, that experience often means being out of work for years. It means losing your home. For most of us, it may mean watching our kids lose their grip on the economic ladder.

So what does Occupy Wall Street want? You're a smart guy, Henry. Figure it out.
